Symonds Yat, Wye valley,
Gloucestershire
National grid reference: SO 56101821
Placed in the centre of a meander in the River Wye below Yat Rock. The deep channels in the soft rock are only like this above ground. It was excavated in 1926 by Alfred Watkins of "The Long Straight Track" infamy and revealed more than twice the height is underground and quite smooth, still protected by the fertile silt. It is said the furrows have the quality of the folds in a regal gown hence the name.
