Martins Down

Martin's Down, Dorset, England

National grid reference: SY 573915
Travel west along the ancient route, which is now the A35, from the Neolithic causewayed enclosure that became the Iron Age hillfort of Maiden Castle past the spring at Winterbourne Abbas and west of Kingston Russell are the magnificent barrows of Martin's Down. A beautiful 198 metre long bank barrow lies across the end of the South Dorset ridgeway amongst long barrows and tumuli. Across the road and in a hollow is this leaning 2m wide stone. The alignment is NNW along the route at right angles to the bank barrow on the top of the hill.
