Lanyon Quoit

Madron, Penwith,
Cornwall

National grid reference: NG 430337

This Penwith Chamber Tomb or Quoit is not as it originally stood, on rebuilding after a storm the upright stones were shortened to make it more secure. Dolmens of several styles can be seen across Britain and are of very similar appearance, indeed worldwide in the Neolithic similar burial chambers were constructed, perhaps a universal way of connecting the ancestors to the land they claimed and settled. In Britain all appear to be located high on the margins of the cultivable land and when covered would form a mound, blending with the environment, echoing the hills on the horizon.
