Devils Arrows

Boroughbridge, Harrowgate,
North Yorkshire

National grid reference: SE 391666

Three stones in alignment 174 metres long in a crooked line and irregularly spaced with local tales relating the existence of five stones originally. The south stone at 22½ ft (6.9m) is the second tallest in the country after the Rudston monolith.
The alignment at 150° SSE points towards the southerly rising of the moon and are probably part of larger complex including the three henges at Thornborough on the plateau between the Rivers Ure and Swale to the North. These henges have been linked with the movements and layout of the three stars of The Belt of Orion : Mintaka, Alnitak and Alnilam and intriguingly have a similar layout to the remaining three Arrows and the later construction of the Pyramids at Giza. However this is probably a fanciful explanation of the stones' layout and is more likely associated with the confluence of the two rivers at Boroughbridge.
