The West Kennet Avenue consists today of 26 set stones in a pair of rows forming an avenue running south east from the Henge complex of Avebury. Originally there were at least 53 stones in the Avenue and it continued for 1½ miles (2.3km) as far as the Sanctuary on Overton Hill. Each pair of stones has similar characteristics in that they consist of one upright oblong slab partnered with a lozenge or diamond shape. The obvious assumption has been made that they were chosen as male and female partners.
